Meet Markus, a smiley 16-month-old who CSI's volunteer surgical team met in Uganda. Markus was born with cryptotia of both ears, a medical condition where the ear structures are buried under the scalp, making children appear as though they are missing parts of their ears. CSI Academic Director, Dr. Siva Chinnadurai performed surgery on Markus, reconstructing both of his ears and scalp.
This surgery not only changed Markus' life, it also provided a unique opportunity for education and collaboration. Dr. Chinnadurai worked side-by-side with the local partner surgeon in Uganda and CSI's first ENT fellow, Dr. Kassaw, who traveled from Ethiopia to Uganda to serve on the surgical team and build skill to take back to his home hospital. Neither partner surgeon had ever seen this particular surgery, so the learning potential was vast and everyone was involved.
Markus' story is just one example of how CSI's unique model goes beyond traditional collaboration to multiply results for patients, families and communities worldwide.
